The azure green waters and the vast spread of green palm grooves with a rich wild life habitation are the attractions in Kerala. It is one of the most popular tourist centers in India. There are many tourists from not only India but around the world who visit Kerala throughout the year. One of the most popular tourist destinations is Kumarakom. Kumarakom is basically a village which is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad lake and belongs to the Kuttanad region. By taking a boat trip around the islands one can catch a glimpse of the many birds of the Kumarakom sanctuary. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is spread across 14 acres of land and is a favorite haunt of migratory birds and is a paradise for bird lovers. Egrets, Darters, Herons, Teal, Waterfowl, Cuckoo, Wild Duck and migratory birds like the Siberian stork that live in flocks are the major birds found in the sanctuary. Kumarakom is also famous for the rich greens, rural life, mangrove forests, captivating coconut canopies, swaying palms, enchanting water ways and canals meandering through pulsating paddy fields and the breathtaking beautiful beaches. Travel to Kumarakom is incomplete without a visit to the Vembanad Lake. There are many backwater cruises that take place in the fresh waters of this lake. Not to be missed are the boat races, houseboat cruise, canoeing and fishing in Kumarakom. There is no parallel to the experience of watching endless miles of snaking waterways, flanked on both sides by bowing palm trees.
